Kastel Banja Luka

Fortress in Banja Luka

Down by the gently attractive riverbank, the chunky walls of a large, squat 16th-century fortress form the heart of Banja Luka.

Its almost-flat layout means the complex lacks the drama of many other Bosnian castles. The walls enclose mainly unremarkable parkland but there are long-term development plans and one stone barracks-building has been converted into an art gallery. Atmospheric restaurant Kazamat is built attractively into the riverside ramparts.
