This section of wall on Bute Park's southern edge is topped with stone figures of lions, seals, bears and other creatures (a seahorse was proposed but sadly never made the cut). Designed by architect William Burges and sculpted by Thomas Nicholls, they were originally erected when the castle was redeveloped in the late 19th century.
In the 1930s they were moved to their present site and became the subject of a newspaper cartoon strip. As a result, many Cardiff kids grew up thinking the animals came alive at night!
