Step inside this beautiful 15th-century Renaissance townhouse, with mummified crocodiles, lizards and bats suspended from the ceiling, to discover five floors of rare pharmaceutical instruments, jars full of esoteric ingredients, and other items pertaining to the history of pharmacy. Several apothecaries dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries have been painstakingly recreated here, with attention given to the "righteous gentile" Tadeusz Pankiewicz and the pharmacy he courageously operated in the Jewish ghetto during the German occupation.
Find out what ailments were treated by the application of Spanish flies, crab’s eyes, bezoar and unicorn horn, then head below ground to peruse the glass alembics, distillation apparatus, copper vessels, mortars and the poison cabinet at the reconstructed alchemist’s lab. Ascend to the attic, fragrant with bunches of dried herbs suspended from the ceiling, and housing medieval herbal treatises that were the cutting edge of medical knowledge at the time.
