Groups of safari-goers in the Masai Mara held their collective breath when a lone wildebeest, separated from its herd, plunged into the Mara River in the vicinity of a huge crocodile.

The wildebeest had been frantically looking in vain for its lost calf when it was forced to make this one last crossing. It wasn’t long before the crocodile’s jaws burst from the muddy water, though the wildebeest made a miraculously timed leap (and twist) at that very instant and somehow managed to avoid certain death. She even managed to give the crocodile a kick on the head with its hind legs on the way down, stunning the reptile for the few seconds she needed to make her escape.
