The world’s first ‘underground’ hotel has officially opened inside the abandoned Shenkeng Quarry in Shanghai, China. After almost four years of construction, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, also known as the Deep Pit Hotel, is already welcoming guests in its unique location.

Located in the Sheshan Mountain Range, the Shanghai Wonderland is mostly below ground, right inside the quarry – and two floors are actually underwater, one featuring facilities for some water sports and the other hosting rooms and a restaurant.

There are around 300 beds divided into three ranges of rooms, classic, executive and the suites. Rates start from around 4000 yuan,(€500). Suites have, obviously, the best view out of all three – they overlook the Hotel’s waterfall, which “covers” the glass façade of the atrium. Other features of the Deep Pit Hotel include facilities for extreme sports like rock climbing and bungee jumping.

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is just 30 kilometres away from Hongqiao Airport, and it’s close to attractions like the Sheshan National Park and the Chenshan Botanic Gardens.
