The number of climbers allowed to scale Mt Fuji, Japan’s highest and most iconic mountain, is set to be scaled back.

Local governments may place restrictions on the number of climbers that can hike the mountain, following studies to be conducted over the next few years. A figure for ideal number of daily climbers will be decided by 2018. Mt Fuji was designated a World Heritage Site in 2013, at which time Unesco requested that the Japanese government prepare a report on the conservation measures being taken at the mountain.
