Five years ago, researchers discovered a type of lanternfish off the Costa Rican coast they had never seen before - it had jet-black skin, a wide grin and organs that faintly glowed in the dark.

Researchers have finally confirmed that the sci-fi shark is a new species, and it has been dubbed the ninja lanternshark, thanks to the imaginative suggestion of researcher Vicky Vásquez’s younger cousins. The Ninja is the first lanternshark discovered in Central American  waters, but swimmers don’t have anything to fear - the shark only grows to roughly 50 centimeters and swims at a depth of 800 meters.
