More than 300 ferry passengers have been rescued in high seas in the Maldives after two boats were wrecked in severe storms.

One of the ferries collided with a reef near Dhiggaru Island in Meemu Atoll and the other took on water and started to sink near Kaashidhoo Island, north of the capital Malé. Meteorologists are predicting extreme weather in the Maldives this year because of a larger than usual El Niño event, and the government has issued a yellow alert weather warning for the coming days.
