An ancient sandstone pillar in the English Midlands that’s rumoured to have satanic origins is to be scanned by drone. The Hemlock Stone, in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire is 200 million years old.

Hemlock Stone could be as important as Stonehenge.

According to local myth it was flung to earth by the devil, who was aiming at a pious priest – the legend may reflect conflict between the early Christian church and pagans. The scan will help scientists ascertain whether the 8.5m-high structure was made by humans or was the work of water erosion. The Hemlock Stone is often linked to two nearby stones, the Druid Stone and Bob’s Rock, and one historian has claimed it could be as significant as Stonehenge. Read more:
