In what will most likely be unsurprising news to most people, Changi Airport in Singapore has been named the "world's best airport" for the eighth consecutive year. It's actually the eleventh time since 2000 that the airport has come top in the World Airport Awards, which are curated by research group Skytrax.
Changi came first out of over 500 airports voted on by airport customers from across the world during the 2019-2020 World Airport Survey, ahead of Tokyo Haneda Airport in 2nd place and Hamad International Airport Doha in third place. Changi sees 5000 arrivals and departures every week by 80 international airlines, and it also clinched top place in the categories of "Best Airport in Asia," "World’s Best Airport Leisure Amenities," and "Best Airport: 60-70 million passengers in 2020."
Among the amenities it offers travellers is a rooftop swimming pool, fish pond, butterfly garden, orchid garden, cactus garden and sunflower garden. There are 24-hour free cinemas, free movie theatres and an entertainment deck that has everything from the Xbox360 to Kinect stations.
In April 2019, a stunning new building opened at the airport called Jewel Changi Airport. The 135,700-square-metre complex houses a mirror maze, hedge maze, a viewing deck with a playground and slides, a giant trampoline, a number of restaurants and dining experiences, a hotel, and an indoor forest complete with a waterfall. Visitors are greeted by the sight of the 40-metre HSBC Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, surrounded by the manicured grounds of the Shiseido Forest Valley.
"Singapore Changi Airport remains a very popular choice with customers and delights at nearly all points in the airport journey, and it is this attention to detail that proves so popular," says Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. "This year also marks the first time that customers have been able to recognise Jewel Changi Airport, a multi-dimensional destination filled with inspiring attractions, unique retail and dining concepts.
