When people imagine what a quintessential vacation might look like, the chances are they are imagining Italy. Nothing shouts 'summer' louder than an Italian holiday, with the country’s blue waters, beaches, art cities, and gelato.
More and more celebrities seem to think that as well because quite a lot of them flock to the Bel paese from the United States and everywhere else around the world. If you’re looking to plan a celebrity-inspired holiday after seeing the wave of new pictures that have taken Instagram by storm recently, then you might want to start with the Lombardy region in the north of the country.
Lake Como, the third-largest in Italy, has always been George Clooney’s favourite spot. He purchased the beautiful Villa Oleandra on the lake’s shores in 2001, and he’s been vacationing there ever since. This year, the villa was home not only to George, Amal, and their twins but also to Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler, and his wife, all guests of the Clooneys.
Lake Como and its Call Me By Your Name charm (the town of Crema, where the movie was set, is barely two hours away from the lake) fascinated Beyoncé, Jay-Z and their daughter Blue Ivy as well. After the Carters performed in Milan, they too took some time off to explore the area before heading further down south to Rome for another concert. Liam Payne is another celebrity regulary seen on the lake’s shores, enjoying the quiet vibes that a lakeside vacation will offer you.
If you’re looking for a beach holiday, though, you could do worse than visit Liguria and its Riviera, with its shingle beaches and fishing villages perched on the shores of the Mediterranean. Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, and their three children enjoyed both Portofino and Camogli, with yacht excursions along the coast and fish dinners at local restaurants. Kourtney Kardashian also enjoyed sailing along the Riviera Ligure with her boyfriend Younes Bendjima.
This year’s true hotspot though was Campania’s Amalfi Coast, the northern part of the Salerno Gulf. The stretch of coastline there has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1997, and among the people it attracts you can find Hugh Jackman and his family, who enjoyed the sights the coast has to offer, and supermodel Karlie Kloss, who actually got the proposal from her now-fiancé Joshua Krushner while they were vacationing there.
After their concert in Rome, the Carters sailed along the Amalfi Coast as well, while Bradley Cooper and Irina Shayk preferred to stay in Positano. The two islands of Capri and Ischia near Naples also fared well — actress Lily Collins chose the latter, while Leonardo DiCaprio, as his surname would suggest, decided to spend some time on the former.
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, hosted Sarah Jessica Parker for a while as well, as she and her family toured the city of Ragusa. Will Smith, his wife Jada and their children, Jaden, Willow and Trey (born from Smith’s first marriage) explored the Aeolian Islands off Sicily’s northern coast. Maybe they enjoyed snorkelling around the recently-discovered coral forests there.
While the beaches might be more popular for relaxing, sun-soaked holidays, Italy’s cities share the same amount of popularity, if not more. Kate Hudson and Zoe Saldana both decided to head over to Tuscany and its cities, Siena and Florence especially, for their summer vacations.
The only question is, where would you like to go?
