A 390-year-old bonsai tree is being honoured this week at the United States National Arboretum in Washington, DC, for having survived the Hiroshima nuclear bomb which was dropped on 6 August 1945.

The Japanese white pine was donated to the United States in 1976 by bonsai master Masaru Yamaki who’s Yamaki Nursery was located just two miles from the site of the bomb blast. The tree’s story was only discovered in 2001, when two grandchildren of the bonsai master came to Washington and identified the tree as the same one pictured in news footage from 1945.
