Wildlife Reserve in Kerikeri

Reached via a permanent causeway through the mangroves, this 12-hectare island provides a haven for the North Island brown kiwi and other native birds, as well as a pleasant picnic spot for their nonfeathered admirers. It has a visitor centre, kayaks for rent (from $22), and you can also arrange after-dark walks to spy kiwi in the wild (adult/child $40/15) can also be arranged. You've got around a 50% chance of seeing a kiwi, and booking ahead is essential.
