Welcome to Portoscuso & Portovesme
It doesn't look good as you approach Portoscuso on the west coast of the Sulcis region. The enormous chimney stacks of a vast thermoelectric industrial complex rise above the flat landscape, offering a nightmarish landmark and presaging visions of industrial sprawl. But when you reach the coast, you'll discover that the industrial blight is actually at Portovesme, a couple of kilometres east of Portoscuso. Portoscuso itself is an attractive fishing port capped by a Spanish-era tower and surrounded by a tiny warren of agreeable lanes; Portovesme is the main ferry port for the Isola di San Pietro.
There's not a whole lot to do in town other than stroll the colourful streets and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, but there's a decent sandy beach and a landmark 16th-century watchtower.
