After its former digs in a Venetian prison near the fortress had become unstable, Rethymno's archaeological collection moved to the Venetian-built former Church of St Francis in May 2016. Tightly curated, but beautifully arranged, it features highlights from major archaeological digs around Rethymno province, including the cemetery at Armeni. Collection highlights include a 4500-year-old chalice, a figure of a Minoan goddess, a Roman bronze lamp and a miniature donkey from the Hellenistic period.
