Place Gambetta

The old street names – place Dauphiné and place Nationale – are still engraved on the wall outside No 38 as a reminder of this tree-shaded square's historic past. Framed by 18th-century buildings, the square originally fell outside the city walls – which makes it all the more ironic that Bordeaux' point zéro, the geographic center of the city in the 19th century from which all distances from Bordeaux are measured, lies here. A stone marker outside No 10 marks the exact point.
