Bridging the almost-closed mouth of a fjord, small, sleepy Kerteminde has a lovable old heart with streetscapes of irregular tiled-roof houses and half-timbered historical courtyards. There are a few museums, several great B&Bs and the town makes a handy base for visiting the superb Viking-era ship grave at Ladby or for exploring the quiet, rural Hindsholm Peninsula, with two of Denmark's most photogenic villages, Viby and Måle.
