Parque Nacional Volcán Poás

National Park in Alajuela & the Northern Valley

Until not so long ago, this was the most heavily trafficked national park in Costa Rica, with 250,000 visitors annually. It lies just 37km north of Alajuela by a winding and scenic road, but at the time of research access was forbidden indefinitely due to an eruption in April 2017. It used to be possible to peer into the active volcano, but now your best chance of experiencing the 2704m giant is from afar.

Some travelers may see smoke rising from the crater in the distance – quite a spectacular sight. Before 2017, Poás had its last blowout in 1953.
