Despite the Garissa University attack taking place hundreds of miles from tourist sites, hoteliers across Kenya fear the events will spark another wave of layoffs in the hospitality sector. One operator, whose camp has a 25 bed capacity, said 19 guests cancelled their bookings when the scale of the raid became clear. The country’s tourism sector has been in decline since 2013 when al Shabaab stormed the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi, killing 67 people during a four-day siege.
