In a bid to encourage more young people to embrace the arts, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich is now offering 10-euro tickets to anyone under 30.

Munich prides itself on being a cultural hub – both nationally and internationally. For those wanting to get to grips with what the city has to offer, the Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) is a good place to start. Not only is it one of the world’s leading opera companies, it is also now one of the cheapest!

Starting this autumn, spectators younger than thirty will be able to buy tickets for just 10 euros. And we’re not talking cheap seats here, just cheap tickets. The offer is an extension of a price reduction that was previously only available to students.

It applies to selected performances throughout the 2019 / 2020 season and includes opera, ballet, concerts and recitals. Think classics such as Carmen and Swan Lake, as well as a new musical theatre project called Eva und Adam, which works with refugees. You can find the full U30 programme on the Staatsoper website.

Tickets can also be purchased online. They go on sale the first Monday of the month for the following month – meaning tickets for November can only be bought from October 7th for example.

The opera company is based in the Nationaltheater in the centre of town, along with the State Ballet and the State Orchestra. The Greek-temple-like building in Max-Joseph-Platz is Germany’s largest opera house and a must for any sightseeing trip. With most of the events included in the U30 deal being performed there, now is the time to go. So pack a posh frock and some nice shoes – and don’t forget to take your ID along on the night.

You can keep up to date with the Bayerische Staatsoper on their website or via their social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram.
