For those who love the Christmas holidays, it’s never too early to start planning—especially when giant mazes featuring thousands upon thousands of twinkling little lights are involved.
From 22 November to 29 December, baseball stadiums in three US cities will be converted into the World’s Largest Christmas Light Maze, a 90,000-square-foot experience driven by a story about a mischievous elf who loses something integral to the festivities (Santa’s reindeer, say, or his presents), as well as features like a Christmas market, an ice-skating trail, and opportunities to meet Santa himself. This year’s venues are Seattle’s T-Mobile Park, and, for the first time in the event’s nine-year history, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Washington, DC’s Nationals Park. Tickets are currently on sale for all three, starting at US$20 (€18) for adults.
Though the offerings vary from park to park, there are a few constants: there’s Santa’s Landing, an out-of-this-world attraction that takes kids to the moon for face-time with jolly St. Nick; local food vendors hawking goodies created especially for the occasion; a kid zone with toys and activities for the under-four set; and live entertainment, from stage performances and buskers to carolers roaming throughout the maze.
In Seattle, the city’s Urban Craft Uprising and Seattle Made will help curate the market, with more than 70 vendors setting up shop, and the Makery, a local business, will operate pop-up craft workshops. In St. Petersburg, the crafts will come courtesy of Pinellas County’s Nook and Cranny; DC and Seattle will both have a cinema showing bits and pieces of classic Christmas movies, from Elf to A Charlie Brown Christmas. Unique to DC is the Ms. Claus Reading Nook, where the First Lady of Christmas will set up inside a tree trunk—complete with a fireplace—to read stories to the little ones.
