If you still haven't finalised your Thanksgiving plans, Amtrak could get you to where you need to be while saving you cash. The rail service announced a flash sale this week with 60% off fares each way across 15 long-distance travel routes between 11 and 24 November - just in time for Thanksgiving which falls on the 28th.

Sample fares include New York Penn Station to Miami at $49; New York to Chicago at $45; Chicago to New Orleans at $39; Chicago to Boston at $35 and Washington DC to Cleveland at $29.

Tickets must be purchased between 5 and 7 November, so you'll need to be quick. Some restrictions apply. For example, the sale applies to adult coach seats only; tickets cannot be upgraded or combined with other discounts and they're non-refundable. Sales are subject to a 25% cancellation fee. To keep up with the demand for holiday travel, Amtrak announced it's increasing its fleet by adding more trains on the Acela (Boston to Washington DC) and Northeast Regional (Boston to DC to Richmond) trains throughout Thanksgiving week. It's also adding extra cars to existing trains along the Midwest and West Coast routes.

"With more than 500 destinations nationwide, customers can witness some of the best sightseeing opportunities the United States has to offer while getting to their holiday destination of choice," CEO Richard Anderson said in a statement. "This year for Thanksgiving, Amtrak customers can also do something good for the environment while traveling with ease to family, friends and loved ones."

Last year, Amtrak had its largest passenger count to date during the Thanksgiving week with over 846,000 passengers on its trains across the country.
