The top pubs in the UK have been chosen by the AA as part of its 2019 Hospitality Awards, which honours the best hotels, pubs, chefs and restaurants across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The winners were selected by AA inspectors, who spent the past year testing properties. They were chosen for being great all-rounders, combining a convivial atmosphere, well-kept beers and ciders and excellent food, with a warm welcome from the friendly and efficient hosts and their staff.

England

The Three Daggers in Wiltshire was chosen as the AA Pub of the Year for England. It opened as the Paulet Arms in 1750 by Harry Paulet, the Lord of Edington Manor, and locals christened it the Three Daggers after the family's coat of arms. Now a pub with its own microbrewery, it has a viewing gallery, farm and farm shop. Its bare tables, mismatched wooden chairs, exposed brick and heritage colours add to the informal country pub feel, as does the seasonal modern cooking. It combines traditional hospitality with contemporary furnishings and decor.

Wales

The Glynne Arms in Flintshire was selected as the AA Pub of the Year for Wales. An old coaching inn, it has quite a deliberate unfinished feel to décor and ambience. Quite colourful in a lot of ways, quirky artwork abounds in the pub, and it has lots of dining space. Its success is down to Charlie and Caroline Gladstone. Charlie's great-great grandfather was 19th-century prime minister, Sir William Ewart Gladstone, who married into Hawarden Castle's Glynne dynasty. Meat, fruit and vegetables come from the couple's estate farm shop down the road.

Scotland

Meikleour Arms in Perth was chosen as the AA Pub of the Year for Scotland. The popular country estate inn has stylish, boutique accommodation with elegant, contemporary bedrooms and cottages. They all have quirky French furnishings, and there's an attractive restaurant with a private dining room, which serves high quality local produce. The residents' sitting room, with its attractive fireplace, is perfect for enjoying the property's own real ale or choosing from the extensive wine list.
