Derby Hill Bird Observatory

New York

Derby Hill, one of the premier hawk watching sites in the eastern US, sees an average of 40,000 of these birds of prey, who use the thermals around the edge of Lake Ontario while migrating further north, every spring. April is the best month to see them, but summers mean bald eagles, butterflies and local breeding birds.

The observatory is 17 miles northeast of Oswego.
