Fort Ontario State Historic Site

New York

This impressive star-shaped fort was built in the 1840s on the ruins of three earlier fortifications dating back to the early 18th century. There are excellent views of the surroundings from its ramparts and tours with costumed interpreters around various sections of the structure.

The fort was occupied by the US Army through WWII and served as the only US refugee camp for victims of the Nazi Holocaust between 1944 and 1946.
