With just a handful of resorts, Raa Atoll is still virtually pristine, making this corner of Maldives popular with divers; most visit on dive safari boats. The capital island Ugoofaaru has one of the largest fishing fleets in the country, while the island of Alifushi is famously home to the finest traditional dhoni builders in Maldives. Arab explorer Ibn Battuta, one of the first foreigners known to have visited Maldives, landed on the island of Kinolhas in 1343 before moving on to Male.
The channel between Baa and Raa is officially named Hani Kandu, though it's also known as Moresby Channel after the Royal Navy officer Robert Moresby, who was responsible for the original marine survey of Maldives made from 1834 to 1836. There’s good diving on both sides of Hani Kandu, where mantas abound in October and November.
