Welcome to Mandraki
This pretty whitewashed and pastel-coloured town stretches languidly along the northern shore of Nisyros, lapped by gentle waters and lined with cafes and tavernas. Perched over the cliff is a castle and monastery. Behind these, and just out of sight, is the incredibly well-preserved ancient city wall. Mandraki is almost completely pedestrianised, so its maze of winding backstreets and garden plots are tranquil and timeless, with a fertile valley sloping up towards the rim of the volcano behind. The ferry jetty is 500m northeast of Mandraki proper. Simply walk straight along the coast to reach the centre.
