Welcome to Massif de la Ste-Baume
Dividing the départements of Bouches-du-Rhône and Var is the Massif de la Ste-Baume, a mountainous ridge 1147m high. Declared a Regional Natural Park in 2017, its 847 sq km are mostly covered in beech, oak and yew forest, and contain the mythical last resting place of Mary Magdalene. But it's not just a place of religious pilgrimage: honeycombed with caves, sheltering an abundance of flora and fauna, and offering glorious walking, it's a destination for nature-lovers, too. The views from the summit of the massif are incredible.
Other than wilderness and holy sites, there's the village of Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume, an extremely quiet and pleasant Provençal mountain village.
