A crossroads since ancient times (the hot-spring spa after which the town is named was known to the Romans), Digne-les-Bains is the capital of the département of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It's the largest town for some miles around, and an important lavender processing centre, but it's a little short on must-see sights. Still, it makes a useful stop-off if you're travelling from the Luberon to the mountains, and it's a useful gateway to the Parc National du Mercantour.
