After a major restoration, York Art Gallery reopened in 2015 with a new art garden and an exhibition dedicated to British ceramics (www.centreofceramicart.org.uk) – the Wall of Pots houses more than 1000 pieces dating from Roman times to the present day. As well as an impressive collection of Old Masters, there are works by LS Lowry, Picasso, Grayson Perry, David Hockney, and the controversial York artist William Etty who, in the 1820s, was the first major British painter to specialise in nudes.
