Welcome to Around Otavalo
Hidden haciendas, once-grandiose epicenters of colonial society, now invite travelers to enjoy their sprawling grounds. Then there’s Ecuador’s largest lake, Laguna de San Pablo, a more domesticated setting with paddleboats and groomed shoreline hotels. We've heard rave reviews about horseback riding and horse therapy at German-owned 4 Volcanoes.
Northeast of Otavalo, the villages of Peguche, Agato and Ilumán are known for their weaving workshops; Ilumán is also notable for its 120-member shaman association. Only 6km further, Atuntaqui is worth visiting solely for the El Museo Fábrica Textil Imbabura. A convenient way to explore these villages is with a tour operator in Otavalo, as tour prices are not much more than a long taxi rental. Most are also easily reachable by public bus.
