Welcome to Paraíba
While few Brazilians and even fewer foreign visitors know its charms, Paraíba offers plenty for those who make the effort to squeeze it into their Northeastern itinerary.
Its capital, the tranquil and orderly João Pessoa, is a fine counterbalance to the crowded metropolises elsewhere in the region with quality city beaches, good restaurants and plenty of parks. Just a short drive to the south there are many spectacular beaches backed by pink cliffs and lined with coconut palms free from crowds.
The coast around João Pessoa is the state’s most important economic region, fueled by the farming of sugarcane and pineapples, and some tourism. Cattle-ranching dominates the drought-affected interior, which also harbors some intriguing archaeological sites.
