Caruaru's big Festa de São João is claimed to be Brazil's largest forró festival, but this culturally rich interior town is worth a visit at any time of year (possible in a long day trip from Recife, 137km to the east). The key draws are its huge daily market, the Feira de Caruaru – the biggest in the Northeast – and its famous ceramic figurines created in Alto do Moura, 6km west of the center, in the style of Mestre Vitalino, the founding master of the tradition.
