Sitting on Ngarluma country, 40km east of Karratha, Roebourne is the oldest (1866) Pilbara town still functioning. It's home to a large Aboriginal community; Yindjibarndi is the dominant language group. The town's heritage trail includes some beautiful historic buildings along the main street, such as the old general store, Union Bank and Dalgety House. Drive or hike up Mt Welcome to the lookout point for the lofty views.
There's also a thriving Aboriginal art scene (www.roebourneart.com.au) and the Aboriginal-run Yinjaa-Barndi Gallery showcases gifted Millstream artists.
The old Victoria Hotel (built in 1866, but shuttered since 2006) is in the process of being restored to its architectural glory. Due to open its doors to the public in late 2019, it's slated to become a tourism and cultural hub for the local community.
