The once thriving but now tiny township of Menzies, 132km from Kalgoorlie, is best known as the turn-off for the stunning Antony Gormley sculptures on Lake Ballard (www.lakeballard.com), an eye-dazzling salt lake 51km northwest of town. Camp at Lake Ballard for free. There are toilets and an area for fires (permitted only April to October; BYO firewood); you must bring all drinking water.
The Menzies visitor centre has information on visiting the sculptures and other local sites, and runs the neighbouring caravan park. As well as the weekday hours, the visitor centre also generally opens for a few hours on Saturdays and Sundays from March to November.
