Laverton crouches on the edge of the Great Victoria Desert, on the traditional lands of the Wongutha and Tjalkanti people. The visitor centre is combined with the Great Beyond – Explorers' Hall of Fame, which uses technology to tell pioneer stories. Next door, the not-for-profit Laverton Outback Gallery is devoted to Wongi art and handicrafts, with up to 80% of the price going to the Aboriginal artist.
Laverton marks the start of the Outback Way (Great Central Road), plus the remote Anne Beadell Highway and Hann's Track, the last two for experienced 4WD drivers only. Expect to overnight and/or stock up on supplies of fuel and water here, and definitely check at the visitor centre for current road conditions.
