Welcome to Launceston & Around
It’s hard to imagine a pocket-sized city more appealing than Launceston. 'Lonnie', as the locals call it, is certainly large enough for some urban buzz, but small enough for country congeniality to be the rule rather than the exception. The city effortlessly melds the historic with the contemporary, bolstered by vibrant arts and food scenes. Winding between narrow cliffs, the amazing Cataract Gorge brings the wilds into the heart of town. Options to venture beyond Launceston are plentiful: the Tamar Valley, Tasmania's premier wine region, is just the pop of a sparkling-cuvée cork from the city; historic pastoral estates such as Clarendon and World Heritage–listed Woolmers hit all the heritage high notes; Narawntapu National Park has myriad marsupials; and the snowy tops of Ben Lomond National Park are as close to Whistler or Cortina as this island gets.
