Welcome to Burnie
Burnie is like Tasmania’s naughty child, the one that used to smoke, belch and foul the waters. All grown up now, it's trying hard to reinvent itself as a 'City of Makers', referring both to its heavy manufacturing past and its present creative flair. The things being made here these days include paper, cheese and whisky – an unusual but interesting mix. Its penguin centre, Makers' Workshop and distillery are well worth a visit, and if you pause to look around, the coast is undeniably beautiful and the beach is pretty good.
