Long dismissed as the island's ugly-duckling city, once-industrial Burnie is trying hard to reinvent itself as a 'City of Makers', referring both to its heavy manufacturing past and its present creative flair. The things being made here these days include paper, cheese and whisky – an unusual but interesting mix. Most visitors are here for business, but its regional museum and penguin centre are well worth a visit if you're on the north coast.
