The courtrooms, cells and gallows here at 'the Tench' had a hellish reputation in the 1800s: a stint here was to be avoided at all costs. This perhaps goes some way towards explaining how these amazing old convict-built structures have survived in the middle of Hobart in original condition into the 21st century.
