The Kiwis have chosen their preferred option to take to a referendum on changing New Zealand’s national flag in 2016.

The silver fern, on a black-and-blue background, could replace the Britain’s Union Jack in March next year. The new design beat the other four shortlisted, receiving more than 550,000 first-choice votes of the 1.5 million ballots cast. The Prime Minister John Key has been leading the push for a change, saying the existing ensign is a colonial relic that is too easily confused with Australia’s  flag.
