Tea is the big drink. It's taken very sweet and with a sprig of mint. Every town will have a cafe where people (men more so than women, but women are welcome) spend hours sipping tea and chatting.

Algeria produces a little beer and wine and imports even more. In fact, in the 1960s Algeria was actually the world's largest wine exporter, twice as much as France, Italy and Spain combined.

Alcohol is not widely consumed in Algeria and is often frowned upon. There are bars in most cities, but they can be seedy and not welcoming to women. International chain hotels often have more inviting bars.
