Welcome to Petaluma
'The world's egg basket' – as the agrarian town of Petaluma has long been known – is seemingly ready to hatch. Sprawling off Hwy 101 a short drive south of Santa Rosa and downtown Sonoma, Petaluma has been grabbing headlines lately for its densely foggy and wind-whipped appellation, which winegrowers have newly dubbed 'the Petaluma Gap.' As wineries such as Keller Estate have become more prominent, and the region's Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Syrahs earn a reputation for their elegance and complexity, the town, too, has been expanding its touristic offerings.
For those on a budget, Petaluma is a good alternative for lodging, and a fine place to while away an afternoon exploring the coffee shops and foodie havens of the city's old brick-building downtown center.
