Welcome to Angels Camp
On the southern stretch of Hwy 49 one figure looms over all others: literary giant Mark Twain, who got his first big break with the story of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, written and set in Angels Camp. There are differing claims as to when or where Twain heard this tale, but Angels Camp makes the most of it. There are gentlemanly Twain impersonators and statues, and bronze frogs on Main St honoring the champions of the past 80 years. Look for the plaque of Rosie the Ribeter, who set an impressive 21ft record in 1986. Today the town is an attractive mix of buildings from the gold rush to art-deco periods.
Calaveras County Visitors Bureau has a walking and driving tour of Angels Camp, history books and lots more beta for your trip.
