Welcome to Anderson Valley
A one-time redwood-logging community, rolling hills surround pocket-size Anderson Valley, more famous today for the apple orchards, vineyards, pastures and its general air of tranquility. Visitors come primarily to winery-hop; the winery scene here has been compared to the Napa Valley some 30 years ago. Most of the wineries are clustered between Boonville and Navarro, but you'll also find good hiking and cycling in the hills and the chance to escape civilization (although weekends can get busy with San Franciscans escaping the clamor of the city). Other things to check out include the craft breweries and the farmstead cheeses; look for signs on the roadside. Cheese is also sold at several of the vineyards and agreeably available for tasting along with the wine. Traveling through the valley is the most common route to Mendocino and Fort Bragg from San Francisco.
