Statue of Guanyu

Statue in Hat Lamai & the Southeast

A sign of the mushrooming Chinese tourism to the island, and of Chinese patronage, is this recently constructed colossal statue of Guanyu (also called Guandi). Guanyu was a 3rd-century general from the Three Kingdoms period who is also worshipped as a deity representing martial valour and is often referred to as the God of War. There is also a temple here, colourfully garlanded with banners and a host of smaller statues, including one of Guanyin.
