Not too far from downtown San Juan, both these suburbs make for worthwhile day trips. Bayamón, the furthest, is all about museums. Its town center is a charming collection of colonial-era buildings mixed with modern-day structures; it has two great art museums as well as tours of emerging artists' studios. A five-minute drive away, Parque de las Ciencias – a hands-on museum and exhibition complex – is a hit with families.
The neighboring municipality of Cataño is heavily industrialized and is home to the Bacardí Rum Factory. Overlooking San Juan Bay, the factory has an extensive verdant campus and daily tours. Nearby Isla de Cabras offers a windswept escape from the city with rocky beaches, footpaths and enviable views of Old San Juan.
