Welcome to Kyaingtong & Border Areas
East of Taunggyi, the landscape rucks up into great folds and is cloaked in dense forest and cut by rushing rivers. This is the heartland of the Golden Triangle, where the production of illicit drugs – opium, heroin and methamphetamines – continues to flourish and where insurgent armies have battled for their own states ever since Myanmar gained its independence in 1948. While some militias have signed ceasefire agreements with the government, parts of the region are still locked in conflict. That, and a myriad of criminal activities, means much of eastern Shan State remains subject to government-imposed travel restrictions.
