Thrillingly remote Belum Eco Resort perches on a private island, thick with jungle and teeming with wildlife. Twelve A-frame chalets (electricity evenings only) line its shore and there are plain houseboat rooms offered, too. Accommodation is basic but it doesn't get closer to nature than this: friendly pet dogs, deafeningly loud cicadas, and breakfasts on a terrace overlooking the lake.
Host Steve Khong is a wealth of local knowledge and guided tours of the area emphasise minimal impact on the environment, striving to educate visitors about native wildlife.
Book at least a week or two ahead. The rate includes a boat transfer between Pulau Banding jetty and the island, daytime activities in the park, evening entertainment and all meals. Phone reception is threadbare (a pot plant marks the only spot with good signal).
