Welcome to Palestrina
Largely overlooked by foreign visitors, hilltop Palestrina hosts some extraordinary archaeological treasures. In ancient times the town, then known as Praeneste, was home to a spectacular temple, the Santuario della Fortuna Primigenia, which covered much of what is now the centro storico. The sanctuary has long since been built over but you can still explore its few remaining terraces at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Palestrina, the town’s excellent museum.
Palestrina stands on the slopes of Monte Ginestro about 40km east of Rome.
