Balpakram National Park

Nature Reserve in Garo & Jaintia Hills

Balpakram is traditionally considered by the Garo to be the ‘abode of souls’: where people temporarily go after they die. The park is thick with wildflowers and butterflies in spring, and its little canyon geologically separates the Garo and Khasi Hills. Avoid visiting during the monsoon, as the road is frequently washed away. Arrange for a jeep and guide (₹2000 per day, respectively) in Tura, 165km away.
